Christmas Concert

The band will present their annual Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Call time is 6:45. Bragg Middle School will play at 6:30 that evening. We will be wearing uniforms so students need to be sure to bring, or wear, their black shoes and socks that night.

Gardendale Christmas Parade

The Gardendale Christmas Parade is this Thursday at 6:00 pm. Call time for the students is 5:00 pm. We will meet in the band room to get uniforms and line up outside the band room. We should be finished with our part of the parade between 6:45 and 7:00. Please either pick your child up at the band room or have a meeting spot where they can find you.

Gardendale vs. Florence

We are moving on to the third round of the state playoffs. This week we will host Florence here at Gardendale. Call time for Friday will be 5:30 p.m. If we win this week, we will move on to the fourth round which will be next Friday, November 28. That game would be an away game at either Clay-Chalkville or Decatur depending on who wins their game this week. Call time and travel information will be listed here on the Blogspot. I will also send information out on Remind. If you have not signed up for this service, you can text the message @3efcf to the number 81010. It should send you a text within 10-15 seconds asking for your name. Type your name and hit send and you should be signed up to receive my messages.

Gardendale vs. Homewood this Friday

Gardendale will play Homewood in the second round of the state playoffs this Friday at Gardendale High School. The game will start at 7:00 p.m. Our call time will be 5:15 because we are the 33/40 Blitz Game of the Week. They will have their live shot set up in the end zone at the stadium and they want the band there. We have to be in place by 6:00 p.m. so that is why we have the earlier call time. Students need to dress in layers underneath their uniform to stay warm. I would suggest getting hot hands and hot feet to help stay warm. We want students to stay warm but we also want to maintain a nice uniform appearance. We also have to be ready to play at any time so we do not need to be huddled under blankets in the stands.

State Playoffs- Gardendale vs. Ft. Payne

Gardendale will travel to Ft. Payne High School on Friday, November 7 for the first round of the state playoffs. We have chartered buses and will load equipment starting at 1:30 that afternoon. We will stop to eat on the way. Students will need to bring money for the food court in the mall. They have the usual choices- Chick-fil-a, Pizza, Chinese, Japanese.

Call time for tonight's game is 5:30 p.m. Parents of seniors are asked to be at the bottom of the hill in the stadium by 6:15. Senior recognition will begin around 6:30. GHS vs. Ft. Payne and Hayden Contest

Friday

Call time for Friday's home game vs. Ft. Payne is 5:30. Students should eat before they come to the school at 5:30. They should wear their gray band t-shirt.



Saturday

Call time the Hayden Contest this Saturday will be 2:15. We will have a short rehearsal at the stadium. The boosters will provide a meal for the students before we leave. We will perform at 6:40 p.m. The stadium at Hayden is not at the high school. It is behind their elementary school on 160.

Gardendale at Woodlawn

The game against Woodlawn this Friday will be played at Lawson Field.  Follow the link below for directions. Call time for the students is 5:00 p.m. We plan to leave at 5:30.  Students should eat dinner before coming to the band room at 5:00.

October 4 Sparks in the Park Contest at Spain Park High School

Call time for this Saturday, October 4 will be 2:00 p.m. Students should be at the Gardendale High School stadium with their instruments and equipment at that time. They should eat lunch before they come to the school.  They should not bring their lunch with them and plan to eat at 2:00. We will have a short rehearsal and a run through of the show before we load and leave. We are scheduled to be in the warm-up area at 5:15 at Spain Park High School. Our performance time is 6:00 p.m. After we perform, students will load equipment and change out of their uniforms. We will then go back into the stadium and sit together as a group to watch the remaining band performances. They will have an opportunity to visit the concession stand to purchase food for dinner. They will need to bring money for that. The last band is scheduled to play at 9:40 which means awards will start around 10:00 p.m. We should leave there by 10:30 and be back to Gardendale around 11:00 p.m. I will provide links for the full schedule, the program, and directions to Spain Park High School.

Tuesday Practice, Bon Fire, Parade, Game

We will not have after school rehearsal tomorrow- Tuesday, September 23. Students will need to be at Moncrief Park at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday evening for the bon fire.  The high school portion will begin a little after 7:00. They will need to wear their new maroon band jersey, khaki shorts, and tennis shoes. If they have not paid for the new jersey they need to bring $10.00 when they pick it up. Please make checks payable to Gardendale Band Boosters. The bon fire should end between 7:45 and 8:00 p.m. Parents are responsible for their child's transportation to and from the bon fire.

Our homecoming pep rally will be Friday morning.  Students will be allowed to check out after the pep rally if they bring a note from a parent.  They will need to be back to the band room by 12:30 to get ready to line up for the parade which starts at 1:00. We should be finished with the parade between 1:30 and 1:45.

Call time for the game Friday night will be 5:30. We will be doing our normal half-time show before the game. We will start the show around 6:30 or 6:40 or as soon as the teams finish pregame warm-ups. We will be on the field playing for the homecoming court during half-time.

Homecoming Week Events

The band will be participating in the homecoming bonfire on Tuesday, September 23 at Moncrief Park in Gardendale. Students will be responsible for their own transportation to this event. We will meet at the park at 6:45 p.m. to get organized. Fox 6 Band of the Week

The Gardendale Rocket Marching Band will be featured on Fox 6 Sideline this Friday night as their "Band of the Week".  The segment will air around 10:40-10:45 p.m. Be sure to watch or set your DVR to record!

Pinson Valley at Gardendale

We will have our first home game this Friday. Call time will be 5:30 p.m. Students should eat dinner before they arrive here at 5:30. They will need to wear their gray band t-shirt underneath their uniform. We will take jackets off in the stands after we march in and after halftime so we will all need to match. Please make sure they have their black band shoes and long black socks. The boosters will provide water after we march in and a drink and snack after halftime. Students who drive should park in the dentist's parking lot across the street from the band room. They will not have to pay to park there. They should have their student parking decal displayed if they are driving.

UAB All-Star Marching Band Application

Students who would like to participate in the UAB All-Star Marching Band on September 13 should click on the link below and follow the instructions. Deadline for registration is Friday, August 29. There is a $50.00 charge.  The link will explain what this fee covers.  This is an event which students will register for individually. Parents will be responsible for transportation and also be responsible for their child that day. This is not a school sponsored field trip.

We will provide them with gloves this week.  If they lose these gloves they will have to purchase the next pair for $5.00.  The game this week will be at the old Trussville stadium. This stadium is not at the new High School.

New Band Jerseys

We are in the process of ordering our new band jerseys for this year.  All students who play an instrument will be required to have one. Dance team and guard girls are welcome to order but are not required to. Students will be turning in their sizes during class. We stopped ordering the older type of jersey because they were difficult to find and the price had gone up to around $36.00. These new shirts will cost $10.00 for students and any parent who would like one. We will wear these in the homecoming parade, at the bonfire and other occasions. Any parent who would like one is welcome to order.  I need to know your size by 10:00 a.m. this Friday if you would like one. You can simply email me at tstarnes@jefcoed.com with your name(s) and size(s). We need to know sizes as soon as possible so that we can get the shirts ordered.

The shirt will be maroon and have GHS Band on the front.


Gardendale at Mortimer Jordan Thursday, August 21, 2014

We will be traveling to the football jamboree this Thursday at Mortimer Jordan.  Our call time is 4:30 p.m. We will leave GHS at 5:00.  We will arrive at Mortimer Jordan by 5:30.  Students will have an opportunity at that time to visit the concession stand.  They should plan to bring money if they choose to buy anything to eat or drink at the concession stand.  Our boosters will provide water once we are in the stands.  They will also provide a drink and snack after half-time.  We should be back to Gardendale around 9:30-10:00 p.m.

All permission to travel and medical forms must be turned in before your child will be allowed to board the bus.

We will wear our gray band t-shirts, khaki shorts and tennis shoes again this week. Guard and dance girls should check with their sponsor to confirm what those groups will wear.  Please make sure you have the correct footwear.

Meet the Rockets Updated Again!

The band will be performing at Meet the Rockets on Friday, August 15 at the GHS football stadium.  The call time will be 7:15 p.m. Students need to be in the band room at 7:15.  The pep rally begins at 7:45 and will last approximately 30 minutes.  There will be an $5.00 admission charged to the event- $10.00 for Pre-purchased admission and meal. Students will wear their gray band t-shirt, khaki shorts and tennis shoes. They will wear this same outfit for the football jamboree next Thursday night at Mortimer Jordan. Colorguard and dance team members will need to check with their sponsor to find out what to wear to each event.

Spring Concert 2014

We will present our spring concert on Tuesday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.  The students will wear black shirts, black pants, and black shoes and socks as they did for the concert in February.  Bragg Middle School's 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will play at 6:30 and we will play when they finish.  Please plan to attend!

Spring Trip Meeting

We will have our spring trip meeting on Monday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  I will have a more detailed itinerary, travel forms, medical forms, medication forms, and other information to go over regarding expectations and rules for the students.  It is very important that the student going on the trip and at least one parent or guardian be present at this meeting.  If you are unable to attend, you will have to come by the school and meet with me individually before April 18.  I will need a copy of the child's medical insurance card (front and back on a single sheet of paper) to include in my binder which will have the emergency contact information for each student.  If possible, make a copy of this card before you come to the meeting. If you do not have access to a copier, I will have one at the meeting but it may be a slow process and have a waiting line.  We have had successful trips each year with things running very smoothly. This meeting is the first step towards that goal.  Please make plans to attend!

Fundraiser

We will begin what I believe is our last fundraiser for the year this weekend.  I will hand the brochures out to the students tomorrow.  The profit from this fundraiser will go to each students account and may be applied toward fees or the spring trip.  The fundraiser forms and money will not be due in time for this to count toward fees that are owed before the band banquet.  If your child is attending the banquet, all fees must be paid before the banquet.  The deadline for orders and money for the fundraiser is Wednesday, March 19.  Checks should be made payable to Gardendale Band Boosters.

MPA Performance TIME CHANGE and Itinerary

We will be playing at Homewood High School on Wednesday, March 12 at 12:15 p.m.  If you are able to go or are near Homewood that day, we would love to have you in the audience supporting us!  Students will need money to eat lunch in the food court at Brookwood mall.

Band Banquet Information

The Band Banquet Invitations have been handed out to your student in class last week.

The Band Banquet is Saturday March 8, 2014 at the Wynfrey Hotel. This is a great time for the students to have fun after all of their hard work. The Band Members, Color Guard, and Rockettes may attend at no cost provided that their fees have been paid and are current. The cost for non-Band members is $30 per person.

The students must RSVP by 3:00pm Friday February 14, 2014. Please send RSVP card along with any payments to Mr Starnes.

Pre-MPA Concert, MPA, Band Banquet, Spring Trip, and Sectionals

The band will present their annual Pre-MPA Concert on Thursday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  We will have a few people on hand to critique the band and give us some areas to improve on before we play at MPA.  We have had a small problem with some of our uniform coats so we have shipped all of them back to Stanbury at their request so that they can correct the issue.  We decided that this would be the best time to do this since we only wear the uniforms a few times during this semester.  They are very busy making uniforms during the summer and we need them more often during the fall.  Because of this, we will be wearing black dress pants, black long sleeved dress shirts, and black shoes and socks for the Pre-MPA Concert and possibly for MPA.  They can wear their band shoes or black dress shoes.

We still don't have our assigned day or time for MPA.  It will be at Homewood High School again this year.  We will most likely play on Wednesday, March 12 or possibly Thursday, March 13 around lunch time.  That could be 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. but I'm just not sure right now.  We should have the schedule in the next week or so.  As soon as I get it, I'll let the students know and post it here.

Each student should return their banquet RSVP card by Friday, February 14 if they plan to attend the band banquet on March 8.  Band students will be admitted for free.  However, they must have all of their band fees paid before they will be allowed to attend.  Guests are $30.00 each.

If your child is participating in our spring trip to Disney World, please make sure that your trip payments are up to date.  I will be sending the room list in by the beginning of March.  Everyone must be up to date on payments at that time.

We have had to modify our sectional schedule because of the weather and missed school days.  Alto Saxophones will rehearse on Tuesday, February 11 from 3:15-4:15.  Trumpets will rehearse on Thursday, February 13 from 3:15-4:15.  Low brass and low reeds will rehearse on Tuesday, February 18 from 3:15-4:15.
